Tragic assassination of Archduke's wife Sophie
Sophie Chotek
A woman from the Bohemian noble Chotek family and wife of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne. In her youth, she served as a lady-in-waiting to Archduchess Isabella, wife of Archduke Friedrich, Duke of Teschen, where she became close with Franz Ferdinand. Due to the difference in their social ranks, their marriage was morganatic, and after marrying, she was granted the title of Princess of Hohenberg, later Duchess of Hohenberg, though she was not granted a rank or court precedence equal to that of an archduchess of royal blood. They had three children together, and on June 28, 1914, she was assassinated alongside her husband in Sarajevo. This assassination served as the direct catalyst for the series of international crises that led to World War I.
