The Sarajevo Incident occurred on June 28, 1914, when Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, and his wife Sophie were assassinated in Sarajevo by Gavrilo Princip, a Bosnian Serb nationalist associated with Young Bosnia and the Black Hand. The assassination aimed to sever Austria-Hungary's South Slav provinces so they could be combined into a Yugoslavia. This event set off the July Crisis, leading Austria-Hungary to issue a stern ultimatum to Serbia and declare war on July 28, 1914. Through a chain of interlocking alliance obligations, major European powers mobilized quickly, transforming a regional Balkan conflict into the full-scale global war known as World War I.
