Aging Emperor Who Declared War in 1914
Franz Joseph I
Austrian Emperor, King of Hungary, and King of Bohemia of the House of Habsburg-Lorraine. He ascended the throne at the age of 18 on December 2, 1848, and served as monarch for approximately 68 years until his death in 1916. Through the Ausgleich of 1867, he established the Austro-Hungarian Dual Monarchy, restructuring the empire's governance through compromise with Hungary. He was deeply involved in major European political issues of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, including the Italian unification movement, conflict with Prussia, and Balkan nationalism. In his later years, he annexed Bosnia and Herzegovina, and following the Sarajevo incident in 1914, declared war on Serbia, initiating World War I. During his long reign, he suffered many personal tragedies, including the execution of his brother Maximilian, the suicide of his son Crown Prince Rudolf, the assassination of his wife Elisabeth, and the assassination of heir presumptive Archduke Franz Ferdinand. He died during World War I and was succeeded by his grandnephew, Charles I.
