Last Emperor Who Pursued Peace for Austria-Hungary
Charles I
Emperor Charles I of Austria and King Charles IV of Hungary of the House of Habsburg-Lorraine. He succeeded to the throne following the death of Franz Joseph I in November 1916, becoming the last monarch of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Having ascended the throne during World War I, he immediately faced the difficult tasks of ending the war and restructuring the empire. He pursued secret peace negotiations with the Allies and sought to maintain the monarchy by granting greater national autonomy and converting the empire into a federation, but he could not halt the prolonged war and rising nationalist movements. In November 1918, he renounced his participation in state governance without formally abdicating, and fled into exile in Switzerland after the empire collapsed. In 1921, he twice attempted to reclaim the Hungarian throne but failed, resulting in his exile to the Portuguese island of Madeira. He died of respiratory failure caused by pneumonia in 1922 at the age of 34. A devout Catholic, he was beatified by Pope John Paul II in 2004.
