Georg Michaelis
Georg Michaelis
A German jurist, bureaucrat, and politician. During World War I, he served as Chancellor of the German Empire and Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Prussia from July to November 1917. He was the first non-nobleman to become Chancellor in the German Empire, selected with the backing of the military following the resignation of his predecessor, Theobald von Bethmann-Hollweg. After studying law, he engaged in education related to German law and the German language in Tokyo, Japan, and upon returning home, rose through the ranks as a Prussian bureaucrat. During World War I, he was in charge of grain supply and became a central figure in the administration of food issues. While serving as Chancellor, he did not explicitly support the Reichstag Peace Resolution and took a pro-military stance, deteriorating relations with parliament. His criticism of the Social Democratic Party over the Wilhelmshaven mutiny in 1917 also provoked backlash from parliament, leading to his resignation as Chancellor in November of the same year. From 1918 to 1919, he served as the High President of the Province of Pomerania, after which he engaged in conservative and nationalist political activities, student support, and Protestant church work.
