The grenade attacker of the Sarajevo convoy

Nedeljko Čabrinović

A Bosnian Serb printer and political activist from Austro-Hungarian-ruled Bosnia. He joined "Young Bosnia," a nationalist youth movement aiming for the unification of South Slavic peoples, and was also connected to the Serbian secret society "Black Hand." In the Sarajevo Incident on June 28, 1914, he threw a bomb at Archduke Franz Ferdinand's motorcade, but the assassination attempt failed, and he was subsequently arrested. Found guilty of high treason at trial, he escaped the death penalty because he was under 21 at the time and was sentenced to 20 years of hard labor. Imprisoned at the Theresienstadt fortress, he contracted tuberculosis under terrible conditions and died in prison in 1916 at the age of 20.
