Robert Schumann and the Romantic Imagination

Robert Alexander Schumann

A leading composer, pianist, and music critic of the German Romantic period. He also had a deep interest in literature and left behind works in a wide range of genres, including piano music, lieder, chamber music, symphonies, choral works, and opera. Aiming to become a pianist, he gave up his career as a performer due to an injury to his right hand, shifting his focus to composition and music criticism. In 1834, he founded the "Neue Zeitschrift für Musik" and actively praised emerging musicians such as Chopin and Brahms. After marrying Clara Wieck, he engaged in vigorous creative activity in lieder, symphonies, and chamber music, greatly influencing 19th-century German music.
