Ernst Moritz Arndt and German Nationalism
Ernst Moritz Arndt
A German historian, writer, poet, and political thinker. In his youth, he advocated for the abolition of serfdom, and later strongly opposed Napoleonic rule over Germany. During the Napoleonic Wars, he raised German national consciousness through patriotic writings, poems, and songs, becoming an important early figure in German nationalism and the movement for German unification. His representative works include "The Spirit of the Time" (Geist der Zeit) and "What is the German's Fatherland?" (Was ist des Deutschen Vaterland?). From 1818, he served as a professor of history at the University of Bonn, but following the Carlsbad Decrees, he was deemed a political "demagogue" and suspended from his professorship. He was later reinstated and became a member of the Frankfurt National Assembly in 1848.
