Eduard Bernstein: Theoretical Father of Revisionism
Eduard Bernstein
German social democratic politician and socialist theorist. Active as a key theorist of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD), he is known for criticizing Marxist revolutionary theory and systemizing "revisionism" or "evolutionary socialism," which aimed to achieve socialism through parliamentary democracy and gradual social reform. In his 1899 book Evolutionary Socialism (The Preconditions of Socialism and the Tasks of Social Democracy), he criticized Marxist predictions that capitalism would inevitably collapse as well as the theory of transitioning to socialism through revolution. During his long exile, he formed a close friendship with Friedrich Engels, and after returning to Germany, he served as a member of parliament. Although he initially voted for war credits at the outbreak of World War I, he later turned toward anti-war pacifism and participated in the formation of the USPD. After World War I, he returned to the SPD and defended the parliamentary democracy of the Weimar Republic. He exerted a major influence on the theoretical development of modern democratic socialism and social democracy.
