The Iron Chancellor and German Unification
Otto von Bismarck
Politician and diplomat of the Kingdom of Prussia and the German Empire. As Prime Minister of Prussia and the first Chancellor of the German Empire, he achieved the unification of Germany under Prussian leadership. He became Prime Minister of Prussia in 1862 and diplomatized wars with Denmark, Austria, and France to lead the founding of the German Empire in 1871 via the North German Confederation. Known as the "Iron Chancellor," his diplomacy was grounded in Realpolitik, which emphasizes realistic balance of power. After the founding of the German Empire, he isolated France and maintained the balance of power in Europe through a combination of alliances with Russia, Austria, and other powers. As a countermeasure against socialist forces, he established social insurance systems such as health insurance, accident insurance, and old-age and disability insurance, becoming a pioneer of modern social security systems. Meanwhile, he also pursued policies to suppress Catholic forces and socialist movements, including the Kulturkampf (Cultural Struggle) and Anti-Socialist Laws.
