Mapping the Human Blood Circulation

William Harvey

An English physician, anatomist, and physiologist. Known for experimentally studying the function of the heart and blood circulation, systematically revealing the mechanism by which the heart pumps blood throughout the body and blood circulates. Through his 1628 book De Motu Cordis (On the Motion of the Heart and Blood in Animals), he published the theory of blood circulation, which had a major impact on the establishment of modern physiology. He served as physician to Kings James I and Charles I, and held important posts in the Royal College of Physicians.
