Sir Thomas Roe: Diplomat to the Mughal Court

Thomas Roe

An English diplomat, politician, and explorer. Serving James I and Charles I, he acted as a diplomatic envoy to the Mughal Empire, the Ottoman Empire, and the Holy Roman Empire. From 1615 to 1619, he stayed at the court of the Mughal Emperor Jahangir, contributing to obtaining permission and protection for the English East India Company to establish a factory in Surat. In 1629, he mediated peace negotiations between Sweden and Poland, participating in European diplomacy surrounding the Thirty Years' War. He also served as a Member of Parliament and was known as a patron of scholarship and manuscript collection.
