Central Europe was a primary battleground of the Cold War, shaped by courageous reformers and dissidents. Figures like Imre Nagy in Hungary and Alexander Dubček in Czechoslovakia sought humanized socialism, while dissidents Václav Havel and Lech Wałęsa mobilized civil resistance. Pope John Paul II provided spiritual impetus, and leaders like Willy Brandt altered diplomacy through Ostpolitik. Together, these figures eroded Soviet hegemony, sparking democratic revolutions across Central Europe.
