Virginia Governor Who Rebuilt Jamestown After Shipwreck
Thomas Gates
An English soldier and colonial leader. As a senior official of the Virginia Company, he was involved in the early administration of the Jamestown colony and served as governor of the Virginia Colony. Following the shipwreck of the Sea Venture in 1609, he spent about 10 months in Bermuda building new ships before arriving in Jamestown in 1610. Subsequently, he rebuilt the struggling, famine-stricken colony, and was involved in fighting against Indigenous peoples, colonial defense, and expanding into new settlements such as Henricus.
