Edward Hyde: Royalist Leader and Chancellor

Edward Hyde

An English politician, lawyer, diplomat, and historian. During the English Civil War, he belonged to the Royalist faction as a primary political advisor to Charles I, and served as Lord Chancellor to Charles II following the Restoration. He was created Earl of Clarendon in 1661, but after relations with the King deteriorated, he fell from power and went into exile in 1667. Posterity highly regards him as the author of "The History of the Rebellion and Civil Wars in England," which documented the English Civil War.
