John Jenkins: Longtime Governor of Albemarle
John Jenkins
An English military officer and colonial politician. Active in the 17th-century Albemarle colony (present-day eastern North Carolina), he held successive positions including Governor, Deputy Governor, and Council member. Serving four terms as Governor of the Albemarle colony (1672–1675, 1676–1677, 1678–1679, and 1680–1681), he was one of the most long-standing politically influential figures in colonial North Carolina. Emphasizing colonial self-governance, he became a central leader of the faction opposing the control of the Lords Proprietors and trade restrictions under the Navigation Acts.
