John Culpeper: Surveyor and Rebel Organizer
John Culpeper
A surveyor, politician, colonial official, and planter active in the 17th-century Carolina colony. After serving as Surveyor General and a member of the Assembly in South Carolina, he joined anti-proprietary political factions in the Albemarle region. He played an important role in Culpeper’s Rebellion of 1677, and after the rebellion was sent to England to stand trial for treason, where he was acquitted. However, while posterity has portrayed him as the "leader of the rebellion," NCpedia notes that there is little evidence for the traditional view that he single-handedly directed the entire uprising.
