George Mason IV and Rights

George Mason IV

George Mason IV was a Virginia landowner and an ideological leader during the American Revolutionary Period. In 1776, he drafted the Virginia Declaration of Rights, which articulated individual fundamental human rights and popular sovereignty. These ideals became the basis for the Declaration of Independence and the Bill of Rights. At the Constitutional Convention of 1787, deeply concerned about the expansion of central government power and the absence of human rights provisions, he refused to sign the Constitution, paving the way for the introduction of the Bill of Rights.
