Stephen F. Austin: The Father of Texas History

Stephen Fuller Austin

An American-born empresario (colonization agent) and politician. Taking over his father Moses Austin's enterprise, he obtained colonization permits from the Mexican government to bring American settlers into Texas. By 1825, he had settled the initial 300 families known as the "Old Three Hundred," laying the foundation for Anglophone Texas, which earned him the title "Father of Texas" in later generations.
