John Randolph of Roanoke: Fiery Defender of States' Rights

John Randolph of Roanoke

A planter, politician, and orator from Virginia. He served intermittently as a member of the United States House of Representatives from 1799 to 1833, and as a United States Senator from 1825 to 1827. While he started as a political supporter of Thomas Jefferson, he broke with him around 1805 and became the leader of the "Old Republicans" and "Tertium Quids," who advocated for strict limitations on the power of the federal government.
