James K. Polk: Architect of Manifest Destiny

James Knox Polk

The 11th President of the United States. A Democratic politician and one of the most prominent political successors to Andrew Jackson. After serving as Speaker of the House and Governor of Tennessee, he served as President from 1845 to 1849. Strongly advocating Manifest Destiny, he expanded U.S. territory to the Pacific coast through the annexation of Texas, the settlement of the Oregon territory border, and the Mexican-American War. He also kept his campaign promise to serve only one term.
