Isaac Shelby's Military Legacy

Isaac Shelby

An American military officer, frontiersman, and politician. During the American Revolutionary War, he led the Overmountain Men on the Southern front, achieving significant merit particularly at the Battle of Kings Mountain in 1780. Later, he promoted the movement for Kentucky statehood, becoming its first governor in 1792 and its fifth governor in 1812. At age 63, he personally led Kentucky troops at the Battle of the Thames in 1813, and after the war worked alongside Andrew Jackson in land negotiations with the Chickasaw.
