Osceola's Seminole Resistance
Osceola
A Seminole military and political leader. Named Billy Powell at birth, he was raised in Creek culture with his mother, Polly Coppinger. Following the Creek War in 1814, he migrated to Florida with his mother and joined the Seminole people. He strongly resisted the Indian Removal Act of 1830 and western relocation policies, leading the resistance against U.S. forces during the Second Seminole War. In 1837, he was captured under the guise of peace negotiations under a flag of truce and passed away the following year at Fort Moultrie.
