John Tyler: Precedent of Presidential Succession

John Tyler

The 10th President of the United States. He was inaugurated as Vice President under William Henry Harrison in 1841, but succeeded to the presidency when Harrison died 31 days into office. He established the precedent that a Vice President fully assumes the office of the presidency and its authority. A Southern politician who placed great importance on states' rights, he promoted the annexation of Texas during his term and played a crucial role in territorial expansion policies that led to the subsequent Mexican-American War.
