Umberto Eco
Umberto Eco
Italian philosopher, semiotician, medievalist, novelist, and literary critic. He studied how signs generate meaning and how people interpret texts and culture, and became internationally known in both academic research and general literary works. His representative novel, The Name of the Rose, is a historical mystery set in a medieval monastery, combining religion, philosophy, power, knowledge, and the interpretation of signs. He also wrote Foucault's Pendulum and The Island of the Day Before. He taught at the University of Bologna for many years and discussed a wide range of themes such as media theory, literary theory, popular culture, and political propaganda. Known for his criticism of fascism and information manipulation, he continued to contribute to newspapers and magazines until his later years.
