William Averell Harriman

An American businessman, diplomat, and politician. Son of railroad magnate Edward Henry Harriman, he succeeded in finance and the railroad business before becoming a central figure in American diplomacy from World War II through the Cold War. He held prominent positions including Ambassador to the Soviet Union, Ambassador to the United Kingdom, Secretary of Commerce, and Governor of New York, and was deeply involved in the Marshall Plan, the Nuclear Test Ban Treaty, and the Paris Peace Talks.
