Shirley Chisholm's historic political barrier

Shirley Anita St. Hill Chisholm

An American politician, educator, and social activist. In 1968, she became the first African American woman elected to the United States House of Representatives. In 1972, she ran for the Democratic presidential nomination, becoming the first Black person and first woman to seek a major party's presidential nomination. She was known for actively supporting the Civil Rights Movement, the women's liberation movement, educational reform, and the anti-war movement.
