George F. Kennan's containment theory

George Frost Kennan

An American diplomat, political scientist, and historian. He is known as the theoretical proponent of the "Containment" policy against the Soviet Union during the early Cold War. His "Long Telegram" in 1946 and anonymous 1947 essay "The Sources of Soviet Conduct" (the X Article) exerted a profound influence on U.S. foreign policy. In later years, he was also known as a realist foreign policy thinker who criticized excessive militarization, the Vietnam War, and NATO expansion.
