An American politician, diplomat, and lawyer. After serving as Governor of Illinois, he ran as the Democratic presidential candidate in the 1952 and 1956 U.S. presidential elections, losing both to Dwight D. Eisenhower. Known as an intellectual and eloquent politician, he was dubbed an "egghead" and prioritized internationalism during the early Cold War. Under the John F. Kennedy administration, he served as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations and was involved in handling events such as the Cuban Missile Crisis.
