Shigenori Togo

Shigenori Togo was a prominent diplomat who served as Foreign Minister at both the outbreak and the end of the Pacific War. In the Tojo Cabinet, he sought a diplomatic compromise with the U.S. until the very end before resigning. Returning to office under Prime Minister Suzuki in 1945, Togo vigorously pursued peace initiatives through Soviet mediation and advocated accepting the Potsdam Declaration. Overcoming fierce opposition from military hardliners, he played a crucial operational role in securing the Emperor's decision to surrender, striving throughout his career to restore peace through diplomacy.
