Kim Won-bong's Heroic Corps and Military Leadership

Kim Won-bong

Kim Won-bong was a radical independence activist and political figure who founded the secret society Heroic Corps (Euiyeoldan) in 1919. He directed high-profile assassination plots against Japanese colonial officials and covert bombing operations against vital infrastructure. After training at the Whampoa Military Academy, he established the Korean Volunteers Corps in Wuhan in 1938, launching intelligence and propaganda campaigns alongside Chinese Nationalist forces. In 1942, Kim integrated his forces into the Korean Liberation Army in Chongqing as Vice Commander. After World War II, he advocated for a unified Korean government before moving to North Korea, where he held top state posts prior to being purged.
