An English-born religious leader, theologian, and writer who was active during the New England colonial era. He is known for his strong advocacy for freedom of religion and the "separation of church and state." His ideas regarding religion and land rights were deemed problematic in the Massachusetts Bay Colony, leading to his banishment around 1635. In 1636, he purchased land from the Narragansett Native Americans and founded Providence (later Rhode Island). Valuing fair relations with Native Americans, he also engaged in language study and cultural understanding. He is considered a figure who had a major influence on the formation of religious freedom thought in America.
