An English-born religious thinker and one of the key female religious leaders in the New England colonies. She held religious gatherings in the Massachusetts Bay Colony based on the stance of "free grace," attracting many supporters. Clashing with the established Puritan leadership, her criticism of religious authority was viewed as problematic. Tried as a central figure in the "Antinomian Controversy," she was banished from the colony in 1638. Afterward, she relocated to Rhode Island and was involved in forming a haven for religious freedom. In later years, she moved to New Netherland with her family, where she was killed during a conflict with Native Americans (Kieft's War).
