A Scottish-born navigator and naval officer known as a hero of the Continental Navy during the American Revolutionary War. Called the "Father of the American Navy," he gained fame through bold raids and naval battles in the waters near the British mainland. He became an international hero particularly for capturing the British warship Serapis in the Battle of Flamborough Head in 1779. After the war, he also served as an admiral-rank officer in the Imperial Russian Navy.
