Cotton Mather

Cotton Mather

A Puritan minister, theologian, and author during the New England colonial era. Born into the influential "Mather family" of Boston clergy, he served as a religious and intellectual leader. Leaving behind numerous works, he exerted influence across a wide range of fields including religion, history, science, and theology. Strongly believing in divine providence, he held a perspective that interpreted epidemics and disasters from a religious viewpoint. He strongly advocated for the maintenance of social order and Puritan morality in New England. On the other hand, he also faced harsh historical criticism due to his involvement in the Salem Witch Trials mentioned below.
