Sun Li-jen's Military Legacy
Sun Li-jen
Sun Li-jen was a renowned World War II veteran and general, famously dubbed the "Patton of the East," who achieved historic victories alongside Allied forces in Burma. Following the relocation to Taiwan, he served as Army Commander-in-Chief, dedicating himself to modernizing troop training and securing the island's strategic coastal defense lines. However, his strong alignment with American standards and liberal military reform ideals aroused the deep suspicion of the regime's top leadership. In 1955, he was unjustly stripped of power under fabricated coup allegations and subjected to long-term house arrest, though his military brilliance and integrity remain celebrated.
