Ichiro Hatoyama

Ichiro Hatoyama

Returning to politics after his post-war depurge, Ichiro Hatoyama rallied anti-Yoshida forces and formed the Liberal Democratic Party in 1955 through a conservative merger, establishing the long-standing "1955 System." As Prime Minister, he championed autonomous diplomacy, signing the 1956 Soviet–Japanese Joint Declaration to restore diplomatic relations with the USSR and paving the way for Japan's admission into the United Nations while broadening options for post-war foreign policy.
