Succeeding Mao Zedong as party chairman and premier, Hua Guofeng successfully ended the Cultural Revolution by arresting the Gang of Four. Although he initially promoted the Two Whatevers doctrine, his leadership bridged the gap toward the reform era before yielding power to Deng Xiaoping.
