Founding chair who institutionalized the PLO under Arab League backing
Ahmad Shukeiri
Ahmad Shukeiri was a Palestinian diplomat and political leader who served as the first chairman of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) upon its founding in 1964. Supported by the Arab League, he was instrumental in drafting the Palestinian National Charter and establishing the administrative and diplomatic framework of the organization. Shukeiri represented the Palestinian cause in international forums, including the United Nations, advocating for the restoration of Palestinian rights. Following the catastrophic defeat of Arab states in the 1967 Six-Day War, he resigned from his leadership post, paving the way for guerrilla organizations to assume control of the national movement.
