Mastermind of PLO security and key strategist of Palestinian diplomacy
Abu Iyad
Abu Iyad, born Salah Khalaf, was a senior leader and co-founder of Fatah who directed the intelligence and security apparatus of the PLO. As a close strategist alongside Yasser Arafat, he managed internal organizational security, regional intelligence networks, and clandestine operations during the Cold War. Linked to the militant Black September group, he played a central role in high-profile international actions before gradually steering the PLO toward diplomatic realism and international recognition. Abu Iyad was a key architect of the PLO's 1988 Declaration of Independence and peaceful solution strategy before his assassination in Tunis in 1991.
