Anwar Sadat's War and Diplomacy for Peace
Anwar Sadat
Anwar Sadat succeeded Nasser as President of Egypt in 1970 and led the 1973 Yom Kippur War against Israel, restoring Arab pride and altering strategic balances. Realignment away from Soviet influence toward the United States allowed Sadat to pursue bold diplomacy, culminating in his historic 1977 visit to Jerusalem. He signed the 1979 Egypt-Israel Peace Treaty alongside Menachem Begin, earning the Nobel Peace Prize. Although his peace initiative isolated Egypt within the Arab league and led to his assassination by Islamic extremists in 1981, Sadat fundamentally reshaped Middle Eastern diplomacy.
