Mustafa IV
Mustafa IV
Placed on the throne in 1807 by a Janissary revolt against Selim III’s Westernizing reforms, Mustafa IV represented a brief conservative backlash. Backed by anti-reform factions, he promptly dismantled the New Order army and reversed previous modernization attempts. When reformist forces under Mustafa Bayraktar marched on the capital to restore Selim III, a panicked Mustafa IV ordered Selim's assassination. His turbulent reign lasted less than a year before he was deposed and executed.
