Abdulmejid I
Abdulmejid I
Initiating the Tanzimat (Reorganization) era in 1839 with the Edict of Gülhane, Abdulmejid I sought to transform the Ottoman Empire into a modern rule-of-law state. His reforms established legal equality for all subjects, modernized taxation and conscription, and Westernized civil education and administration. Although he successfully allied with Britain and France during the Crimean War to repel Russian aggression, the immense war expenses deeply entrenched Ottoman financial dependency on Western European powers.
