Mustafa III
Mustafa III
Ascending the throne in 1757, Mustafa III sought to halt the empire's decline by implementing military and financial reforms. Concerned by European military superiority, he modernized the artillery corps, established mathematics and drafting schools, and brought in French military advisors like Baron de Tott. Despite his proactive defense efforts during the Russo-Turkish War (1768–1774), inadequate preparations led to severe naval and land defeats, leaving the empire vulnerable to European expansionism before his death.
