Mehmed V
Mehmed V
Installed as a constitutional monarch without real political authority following the Young Turk Revolution, Mehmed V reigned while power was held by the Committee of Union and Progress. Incapable of directly steering the nation through the disastrous Balkan Wars and World War I, he was compelled to declare a holy war (Jihad) against the Allies in 1914 as Caliph. He passed away in July 1918, shortly before the final collapse and defeat of the Ottoman Empire in the Great War.
