Robert E. Lee's Life and Military Career
Robert E. Lee
Robert E. Lee was a military commander who served as the commander of the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia during the American Civil War. Driven by loyalty to his home state of Virginia, he took command of the Confederate forces and plagued the Union army for years with his superior tactics. He surrendered to General Grant at Appomattox in 1865 to end the war. After the war, he assumed the presidency of Washington College (now Washington and Lee University), devoting himself entirely to the education of youth and national reconciliation, making a significant contribution to the post-war recovery and integration of the South.
