American educational reformer and politician, known as the "Father of American Public Education." As the first secretary of the Massachusetts Board of Education, he promoted a free, non-sectarian, and universal public education system (the Common School movement) and laid the foundation for the modern American education system, including the establishment of teacher training schools.
