Amos Lawrence: Merchant Prince and Educational Philanthropist
Amos Lawrence
A prominent merchant, investor, and philanthropist representing New England. Starting his career working in a store in his teens, he became an independent dry goods merchant in Boston in 1807. He supported the development of New England's cotton industry (such as the Lowell mill complexes) financially and through distribution. Retiring from active business after 1831, he donated immense wealth to educational, religious, and philanthropic causes.
