James Weldon Johnson's advocacy
James Weldon Johnson was an American author, educator, diplomat, and civil rights activist born in Jacksonville, Florida. As executive secretary of the NAACP during the 1920s, he built the organizational foundation that powered later civil rights battles. He wrote "Lift Every Voice and Sing," known as the Black National Anthem, and used his literary and legal talents to combat lynching and institutionalized racial injustice across America.
